From September 2025 in England, eligible parents of 9-month old children can access 30 hours of funded childcare per week (for 38 weeks of the year – term time) with eligibility based on parents (or sole parent if single parent family) are working at least 16 hours per week and earning under £100k per year. You can apply when your child is 23 weeks old but the funding will only be eligible the term after your child turns 9 months old.
Families meeting certain criteria can benefit from 15 hours of childcare each week for their 2-year-olds. Eligibility often includes receiving benefits such as Income Support or Jobseeker’s Allowance. This initiative aims to give children from lower-income families a strong start in their early education journey.
All families with children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to 15 hours of childcare per week during term time. This universal offer is designed to ensure that every child has access to early education, helping to develop social skills, confidence, and a love of learning.
Working parents can take advantage of an additional 15 hours of childcare on top of the universal 15 hours, totalling 30 hours per week. To qualify, each parent (or the sole parent in a single-parent family) must earn at least the National Minimum Wage for 16 hours a week but less than £100,000 per year.
The Tax-Free Childcare scheme is available to working families, including the self-employed, across the UK. For every £8 paid into an online account, the government will add £2, up to a maximum of £2,000 per child per year (£4,000 for disabled children). This money can be used to pay for approved childcare, such as nurseries, childminders, and after-school clubs.
Although the Childcare Voucher scheme is closed to new entrants, existing members can continue to benefit from significant tax and National Insurance savings. If you are currently enrolled, it’s worth reviewing your situation periodically to ensure it remains the best option for your family.
